Your first priorities should be to check your condition and the condition of the others involved, call the police, get to a safe location, and seek emergency medical care if needed.

While law enforcement may not preserve cars, trucks, or other vehicles involved in a car accident, law enforcement agencies like the police or Highway Patrol normally will only take certain steps to record evidence at the scene of a car accident upon their arrival. Most police officers will likely photograph the accident scene, inspect the subject vehicles, interview eyewitnesses and document all evidence they believe to be associated with the accident. But their eye is on criminal aspects of the scene, not civil litigation.
